About Educational Software Directory.net

What's this site about?

Educational Software Directory.net is the only search engine and directory devoted exclusively to educational software. Our mission is to connect parents, educators, students, and self-learners with providers of educational software and related information.

If you know of any resources that you feel should be added or have any other suggestions, feel free to contact us about them. And if you have a commercial site and would like to see it added to our directory, you can find out more here.

Commitment to Standards

Standards mean a great deal to us. They benefit both the developer and end user. In many cases they mean lower support costs, greater accessibility, and a better end user experience. In the case of website developers, supporting only one version of a site frees up time to make their sites better in other ways. Also, properly marking up an HTML document benefits people with disabilities, since they may be using non-graphical browsers like screen readers for reading documents aloud from the screen. And everyone gets faster downloads of web pages due to the proper use of web technologies. The Educational Software Directory is committed to supporting web standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium.

Support for Structural Browsing

Our site supports structural browsing. Structural browsing provides another means to navigate a website. Web pages that support this feature provide additional information that tells a browser about other related documents to the one being used. This could be information about the next or previous document in a series or where the table of contents are. Unfortunately, most popular browsers do not utilize this feature.

Missing Quotation Marks on Internet Explorer for Windows

If you're one of the millions of Window's Internet Explorer users - which you probably are - you won't be able to see the quotation marks being used on this site. Since we strive for standards compliance, we use the W3C endorsed quote tag to mark-up where a quotation exists in a document. Unfortunately, Microsoft has not added support for the quote tag to date. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Lack of Presentation Support on Netscape Navigator 4.X Browsers

In order to push the quality and accessiblity of the World Wide Web forward, we decided not to support Netscape 4.X browsers - which current statistics show 2% of browsers in use are. We worked hard to make our content as accessible as possible, and in doing so were forced to sacrifice presentation support for Netscape. Netscape users still will have access to our site although the presentation will be incorrect.

Commitment to Supporting People with Special Needs

Estimates show that there are over 500 million people in the world with disabilities. For the Web to realize it's full potential, we believe websites need to support users with disabilities. The Educational Software Directory provides full AAA conformance of the WAI's Web Accessibility Guidelines, which defines how to make content accessible to people with disabilities.
